How We Use Information
The limited, anonymized technical data that may be collected through third-party services (see Section 6) is used solely for the following purposes:
App Performance & Stability: Understanding crash rates and technical errors to improve reliability of the application.
Aggregate Usage Analytics: Understanding which features are most used in an entirely anonymous and aggregated way (e.g., total number of map opens per day — not tied to any individual).
Service Delivery: Map tile requests to OpenStreetMap servers require your IP address to receive map image data. This is a technical necessity of how web maps function.
Security: Protecting the App and its infrastructure from abuse, fraud, or unauthorized access through industry-standard technical measures.
Data Sharing & Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal data to third parties for commercial purposes.
Any technical data that passes through third-party infrastructure (detailed in Section 6) is governed by those parties' own privacy policies. We may disclose information only in the following limited circumstances:
Legal Compliance: If required by law, court order, or governmental authority, we may disclose information to the extent legally required. We will notify affected users where legally permissible.
Safety: If we believe disclosure is necessary to prevent imminent harm, fraud, or illegal activity, we may share information with appropriate authorities.
Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, user data (if any) would transfer to the acquiring entity, who would be bound by this privacy policy.
Third-Party Services & SDKs
The App integrates a small number of third-party services to provide its core functionality. Each is listed below with full transparency, as required by Google Play Developer Policies.
| Service | Purpose | Data Accessed | Privacy Policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenStreetMap | Map tile rendering (background map images) | IP address (technical), tile requests | View → |
| Leaflet.js | Interactive map JavaScript library | None (client-side only library) | View → |
| Google Fonts | Typography (Syne, JetBrains Mono fonts) | IP address, referrer (anonymized per Google) | View → |
| Unpkg CDN | JavaScript library delivery (Leaflet) | IP address, browser type (standard CDN logs) | View → |
| GitHub Pages | Web hosting for the HTML application | IP address, browser, standard server logs | View → |
Cookies & Local Storage
The App itself does not set any cookies and does not use browser localStorage or sessionStorage to store personal data. All UI state (map position, active filters) is held only in JavaScript runtime memory and is lost when the App is closed or refreshed.
Third-party services (Google Fonts, OpenStreetMap, CDN providers) may set their own technical/functional cookies as part of standard web infrastructure operation. These are strictly necessary for content delivery and do not constitute behavioral tracking.
You can manage or delete cookies at any time through your browser or device settings. Disabling cookies will not impair the core functionality of Global Conflict Monitor.
Data Security
We implement industry-standard technical and organizational measures to protect the App and its infrastructure from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These measures include:
HTTPS Encryption: All communications between the App and any server use TLS/HTTPS encryption, protecting data in transit from interception.
No Server-Side Storage: Because Global Conflict Monitor does not collect personal data, there is no personal data stored on our servers that could be compromised in a data breach.
Static Application: The App is served as a static HTML/CSS/JavaScript file with no backend database, server-side processing, or authentication endpoints — significantly reducing the attack surface.
Dependency Security: Third-party libraries are loaded from reputable CDNs (unpkg) and kept updated. We use Subresource Integrity (SRI) practices where possible.
While we strive for the highest security standards, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security but commit to immediate disclosure of any breach affecting users.
Children's Privacy (COPPA)
Global Conflict Monitor is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or under 16 in the European Union, or under 18 where applicable by local law). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
The App does not include features designed to appeal to children and does not collect any information that would be classified as children's data under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the UK Children's Code, or similar regulations.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has used this App and provided personal information, please contact us immediately at privacy@conflictmonitor.app so we can take appropriate action. Since we do not collect personal data, there is no child data for us to delete — but we will investigate any concerns promptly.
This App is rated for mature audiences (17+ / 18+) on the Google Play Store due to the nature of the content (armed conflict, war data).
Your Privacy Rights
Depending on your location, you have the following rights regarding your personal data. Because Global Conflict Monitor collects virtually no personal data, most of these rights will result in confirmation that we hold no data about you — which is the best possible outcome for your privacy.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@conflictmonitor.app. We will respond within 30 days (or within the legally required timeframe for your jurisdiction). We will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.
GDPR — European Union Users
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or Switzerland, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or equivalent laws apply to you.
Legal Basis for Processing: Where any incidental technical data is processed (e.g., IP address for map tile delivery), the legal basis is legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) — specifically, the technical necessity of delivering map content over the internet. This processing is minimal, necessary, and proportionate.
Data Controller: Global Conflict Monitor Team acts as the Data Controller for any personal data processed in connection with the App.
International Data Transfers: Map tile requests may be processed by OpenStreetMap servers located in various countries. Google Fonts is operated by Google LLC (US). These transfers are covered by Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where applicable.
Right to Lodge a Complaint: If you believe your data has been mishandled, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority (e.g., ICO in the UK, CNIL in France, BfDI in Germany).
Data Protection Officer (DPO): For GDPR inquiries, contact us at dpo@conflictmonitor.app.
CCPA — California Residents
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) provides you with specific rights.
We do not sell or share your personal information as defined under the CCPA. We do not engage in cross-context behavioral advertising. You therefore have an automatic "opt-out" status — there is nothing to opt out of.
Categories of Personal Information Collected: In the past 12 months, we have not collected any personal information as defined under CCPA categories. IP addresses processed by third-party CDNs may fall under "Internet or other electronic network activity" (Category F) but are processed by those third parties under their own CCPA obligations.
Your California Rights: You have the right to know what personal information is collected, sold, or disclosed. You have the right to delete personal information. You have the right to non-discrimination for exercising your rights. To exercise these rights, contact privacy@conflictmonitor.app with the subject line "CCPA Request".
Data Retention
No personal data is retained by us beyond the active session. All UI state held in browser/app memory is discarded when the App is closed.
Third-party services (OpenStreetMap, Google Fonts, CDN providers) retain standard server logs according to their own retention policies, which are typically 30–90 days for anonymized technical logs.
Deleting the App: Uninstalling the App from your device removes all locally stored App data. There is no account or cloud data to delete.
If we ever begin collecting data in the future (which would require an update to this policy and appropriate in-app disclosure), we will establish retention periods based on legal requirements and the minimum time necessary for the stated purpose.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make changes, we will:
1. Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page.
2. Increment the version number.
3. For material changes that affect your rights or the types of data collected, we will post a prominent in-app notification and/or update the App Store listing description.
4. Where required by law (e.g., GDPR for material changes), we will seek renewed consent.
Your continued use of the App after the effective date of any policy update constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
Previous versions of this policy are available upon request by emailing privacy@conflictmonitor.app.
